Before a disaster or an unforeseen event occurs in your area, you should already be prepared for an evacuation plan in case you are ordered to leave your home on short notice. Emergencies can come in a variety of forms with varying preparation times, from storms with fair warning to a more immediate crisis, such as a fire.

What to take with you and where you’re going are two of the most essential things to consider when planning for evacuation. Here’s a guide to help you plan your evacuation and stay safe in case of a tragedy.
Where are You Going?
Try to determine where you can go in the event of an evacuation. Remember that you should have more than one option. You can go to another town, in the wilderness, a hotel, or a shelter. It all depends on what you think is best for you.
But it doesn’t end there. You still have to map out your routes and backup routes to your evacuation destinations in case roads are closed due to the disaster. Try to have a physical map of the area available in case GPS satellite transmissions are down or your devices run out of power.
You also need to know where you and the rest of the family are going to meet in case you are separated from one another during the evacuation. The location should be specific and should be written along with pertinent addresses and phone numbers and give them to each member of the family.
What Are You Taking?
Have a “go bag” ready at all times with some of the most important items you need for survival. It is ideal that each member has his or her own bag. These bags should contain the following:
- Prescriptions and other medicines
- First aid kit
- Bottled water
- Flashlight, battery-powered radio and extra batteries
- Clothing and bedding (sleeping bags, pillows)
- Special equipment for infants or elderly or disabled family members
- “Comfort items,” such as special toys for children
- Computer hard drive and laptop
- Cherished photographs
- Pet food and other items for pets (litter boxes, leashes)
Other Things to Remember Before Evacuating
Two of the most essential parts of evacuation planning is what you’re bringing and where you’re going. But there are other things you should consider, such as:
- Starting your home inventory. The tasks include listing recent purchases, recording serial numbers, checking coverage on big-ticket items, and gathering proofs of value. This will be helpful if you need to apply for disaster aid
- Gather important documents and keep them in a safe place. Make sure to have digital copies of each document and keep them with you on a thumb drive. These documents may include prescriptions, birth and marriage certificates, passports, license, social security cards, insurance policies, employment information, wills and deeds, stocks, and your home inventory
- Are you going to use your car or not? If yes, be sure that you have ample fuel in your vehicle to reach your meeting place, remembering that you may not be able to take your preferred evacuation route.
- Have a contact person outside the affected area so he or she can serve as a point of contact should the family members get separated.
- Including your pets in your plan
- Learning about your community’s warning system
- Have enough cash to pay one week’s expenses in case banks are not accessible
- Leave early and listen to the radio for the latest evacuation information
- Unplug electrical equipment but leave freezers and refrigerators on, unless there is a risk of flooding.
- Secure your home, close and lock all doors and windows, and inform your neighbors of your evacuation plans
- After the evacuation, continue listening to the radio for the latest evacuation information
- Do not return home until authorities declare it is safe.
