The best way to stay safe during a riot is to, well, avoid the riot. If you are informed and you know the current political situation, you’ll know which riot zones to avoid. However, there are situations where you might get caught in it while you’re walking, in the car, or even at home!

Riots and protests can break out anytime, so here are the best ways to stay safe during a riot. 

Gear Up

In the situation of civil unrest, the best gear you should have is a firearm. While rivers of ink have been spilled arguing the salient benefits of this design over that, the reality of the matter is that a reliable AR or AK rifle need not be expensive to be effective.

A cheap black rifle is easy to have, and a half dozen loaded magazines will keep in storage longer than you will. Store with your gun and spare magazines in a safe location in your house where the children cannot access it. Also,  train to the point where you feel comfortable with all of it. 

Another important thing you might need in case a riot occurs is body armor. Body armor is a combat multiplier and the current sordid state of the world has opened up a thriving market for such gear. Options are available for adults, kids, and even pets, all at reasonable prices.

You also need to make sure that your emergency closet has all the essentials, especially if you don’t plan on going out. These include food, water, backup power, and medical supplies, and any specialty items for pets or the elderly should always be on hand. 

Do Not Protect Your Property

You read it right. While preppers and survivalists always aim to achieve personal protection and property defense, it’s different when it comes to riots. Rioters cannot be put in the same category as thieves and other criminals who might break into your home.

Because of mob mentality, which causes people to act tougher when in groups, they become unreasonable and will not be scared off by your warnings. While you are prepared with a firearm, remember that it’s only you and your family against a bunch of people. 

Put your family’s safety over your property, especially because your property can be replaced. Don’t fire your gun immediately!

How to Escape

If you are not at home during a riot and are stuck in one, your main goal is to get out to a safe place. First, blend in. Try to look as much like the rioters as possible. If all the rioters have their hoods up, then put yours up too. Remove your business suit! 

Don’t go against the crowd. Instead, walk in the same direction as them, but at a diagonal. You will soon come to the edge of the mob and can walk away. Once you are out, seek refuge in a nearby building, or find a suitable doorway or alley and stay there until the crowd passes. Don’t try to run if you don’t want the attention to be drawn to you.

If you are arrested, do not resist. Go along peacefully and contact your embassy as well as your travel insurance provider. Remember to stay calm! If shooting breaks out, don’t fight back immediately. Just drop to the ground and cover your head and neck, and lie as flat as you can.   

On the other hand, if you are stuck in a riot while in the car, don’t try to go out. If rioters are standing in your path, keep going at a slow pace. They will move out of the way if they think you will run them over.

Primitive Survivors – Excellent Meals for Camping

Camping food can be prepared ahead at home, or cooked on the camp stove right after catching a game. But it doesn’t have to be complex or boring! There are many tasty camping recipes out there, but these ideas will make your trip more enjoyable and satisfied! Here are four excellent meals for camping!

Mini S’mores

S’mores are great campfire food which children also enjoy. This summer camp recipe is super easy!

Sloppy Joes

Sloppy joes are hunters’ favorite camp recipes. They are delicious, easy to prepare, and a good way to use up your ground venison! Here’s how to make this meal. First, prepare the following:

  • 2 pounds ground deer
  • ½ cup onion, chopped
  • 2 cups of chopped celery ribs, chopped
  • ¼ cup chopped green pepper
  • 1 ⅔ cups canned crushed tomatoes
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon steak sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • 8 to 10 hamburger buns, split

All you have to do for this recipe is cook the beef, onion, celery, and green pepper in a dutch oven over medium heat until the meat is no longer pink and the veggies are tender. Then, drain it and stir in the rest of the ingredients uncovered for 35 minutes. Lastly, spoon about ½ cup of meat into the bun.

Kale Soup

If you’re on a plant-based diet while camping, this soup makes a great outdoor meal! Take note that this is a make-ahead dish. This recipe is an Old-World soup, which means that the kale and cabbage are cooked more than they should be. For the broth, prepare the following:

  • ½ pound lima beans, soaked overnight
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 head garlic
  • 1 tsp red pepper flakes
  • 1 ½ tsp smoked paprika
  • ¼ tsp garlic powder
  • ½ cup white wine
  • 1 tbsp yellow miso
  • 32 ounces vegetable broth
  • 2 bay leaves

For the soup, you will need the following:

  • 1 (16-ounce) bag of kale
  • 1/2 cabbage, cut into chunks
  • 3 large yellow wax potatoes, cubed
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
  • 4 vegan sausages, cut into coins, preferably Field Roast Mexican Chipotle sausage
  • salt, to taste
  • bread, for serving

Simply soak the dried lima beans overnight and remove the skin. Then, add a tablespoon of olive oil to a soup pot. Saute the garlic pepper flakes, paprika, and garlic powder without burning them. Deglaze the pan with white wine and simmer for about a minute.

Then, you can start adding miso, vegetable broth, salt, bay leaves, and peeled, soaked lima beans to the pot. Add water until it is ¾ full. Simmer for about an hour.

Remove the bay leaves from the pot and puree the lima beans with the broth with a blender. Add the kale and cabbage, and simmer for 15 minutes. Then, add the potatoes and leave it for another 20 minutes. 

Lastly, add Tabasco, soy sauce, yeast, apple cider vinegar, and vegan sausages. 

Halloumi Breakfast Sandwich

This breakfast sandwich is perfect for mornings after camping because it has everything you want in a sandwich, from egg and fried cheese to sriracha and more! All you need for this recipe is the following:

  • 1 large Hawaiian sweet roll
  • 1 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 oz halloumi cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 4 tbsp mayo
  • 1 tbsp Sriracha
  • 1 scallion
  • Salt and pepper, to taste 

For this recipe, simply toast the buns with your camp stove and skillet or grill. Then, heat half the butter or oil in your skillet over medium-high heat and add the cheese. Fry each side for 3-4 minutes and set aside.

Heat the rest of the butter and crack the egg in the skillet. While it’s cooking, prepare the spicy mayo by mixing it with the Sriracha. Spread it on each cut surface of the buns and layer on the grilled halloumi, egg, scallions, and salt and pepper.

Primitive Survivors – How to Practice Bow Hunting Turkeys

Wild turkeys have keen eyesight and they eagerly respond to calls. They can be exciting to bowhunt, and you can pursue them in spring. Whether you’re preparing for the opener or just want to enhance your skills, here are some ways you can practice bowhunting turkeys.

Learn the Calls

With a crossbow, you could get a good shot if the gobbler is close to you. Ideally, you need the gobbler to be about 10 – 20 yards away in order for it to be in range. If you’re transitioning from using a gun with a 50-yard+ range, this can be hard to get used to. 

To get them to come closer, you need to learn the calls. Use a mouth call to issue soft clucks and purrs. A mouth call is a great addition to your gear, as it allows you to keep your hands on the bow, and you can play with variations in tones and sounds to really achieve the softer whine that you need. 

Slow Draw

Other than shooting from a different position, bow hunting turkeys differs from bow hunting deer by the concern bow hunters have with the draw. Turkey hunters know that they need to beat the bird’s sharp vision. This makes drawing the bow extremely difficult to get away with. Even if ground blinds make the task easier, try practicing drawing very slowly. You may also draw when the bird is possibly fanned out away from you. Either way, a slow and careful draw is helpful.

Obstacles

Practicing at these scenarios adjusts your routine for a shot on the ground or while sitting and it also helps adjusts your thinking. Watch out for sticks and branches in the way of a shot. Try ground blind practice. It’s the best way to kill a turkey with your bow, no doubt. However, there are restrictions. You will be limited in your visibility, hearing, and shot angle.

Practice shooting from your knees as well. Ask yourself these questions. Can I clear the window easily when shooing from the blind? Can I not make noise or bump the sidewalls of the blind while having enough room in it?

Learn to practice in the timber as well. While most turkeys are killed with a bow in wide-open fields, you can still practice bowhunting in the timber. Here, it will be more difficult because of the low-light conditions in the woods. But taking the time to practice here will get you ready to go when the opportunity comes, and you’ll build confidence for a run-n-gun bowhunting effort when the time is right. 

You can also practice from a chair. Use a turkey lounge chair against a tree so you can shoot your bow nice and easy from them. Take the time to make sure you have adequate limb/cam/string clearance from various angles. These chairs may be hard to carry but they are comfortable stools for waiting for hours. You can take naps on it as you wait out for your bird.

You can also use different positions and postures of targets for practice, like a strutting bird, an upright/alert bird that’s not in strut, as well as a semi-strut gobbling turkey target. They provide a more realistic practice routine, especially when it comes to preparing yourself for different shot positions of the wild turkey.

Wear the Same Clothes

Practice different positions in the clothes you would wear to a turkey hunting session. It will surely benefit your success since you’re more familiar and comfortable in the actual hunt. Remember that concealment is the number one priority when hunting turkeys with a bow. Everything from your face and clothing to your gear and blind needs to be camouflaged correctly, or else risk scrutiny from a tom’s unforgiving gaze.
