Primitive Survivors – Rules of Outdoor Survival: Unwritten Rules That Will Help You Survive

We know you already heard and perhaps listen to survival rules from the experts when you’re outdoors. Adding some important survival knowledge is not something that you’ll lose in the process but instead, it is your gain. In this post, we will give you the unwritten rules that will help you survive. When life and death situation happens you need to know the proper knowledge, set of skills and movement.

Primitive Survivors

Your Rule of 3 Survival in the Outdoors

This rule of 3 will help you to increase your survival rate outdoors. This is based on our own human body capacity and needs. It talks about how long our human body can withstand the lack of air, shelter, and food. The survival rule of 3’s is four separate rules that discuss the basics of survival based on the 3 needs of air, shelter, and food. The importance of knowing these is that you’re able to maneuver and survive the ordeals.

Bear in mind the following:

Up to 3 minutes without breathable air or in icy water or having severe bleeding.

Up to 3 hours in harsh weather without shelter.

Up to 3 days without drinking water.

Up to 3 weeks without food intake.

While there are some differences that depend on your situations, they greatly serve as a reminder about how long you can survive under each situation. The rules are designed to focus your attention on the most urgent and important concern and solve it before you move on to something else.

You can learn from this best-case scenario which is meant as a practical rule of thumb that established a foundation you can then build on when faced with this survival ordeals outdoors. If you are out of icy water and find yourself breathing clearly, or you are not bleeding nor severely injured, you have three hours to get out of the harsh environment and find shelter. If you can find or construct one, that shelter, then you have 3 days to worry about water. If you can get even a bit of water through moist and rainfall, you have a full 3 weeks to search for food before you’re out.

How to deal with air concerns?

When you’re outdoors the chance of being stung by a bee is a probability especially if you’re hiking. The reaction of your body once a bee stung you is a swelling. It’s recommended to bring some Benadryl with you to help ease your swelling until your body heals. High altitude is another concern when you’re getting higher altitude you’ll expect some difficulty in your breathing. Because your body is adjusting on the altitude it’s recommended to take your steps slowly and slowly breathe in and out so help your body adjust.

You can consult your Physician before going into a high altitude mountain trekking and do some medical checkups to be sure you are able to do such outdoor activities. There are some cases where due to sudden changes in altitude some people experienced difficulty in breathing which leads to cardiac arrests and to their untimely deaths.

How to deal with shelter concerns?

The main purpose of having a shelter outdoors is to be able to regulate your body temperature and protect you from the harsh environment. It is best that you learn the many ways of constructing a shelter outdoors like bushcraft so that you can maneuver well based on your situation. Lighting a fire is another thing that is useful so that you can maintain your body temperature. Bring a set of clothes in which you can change yourself. You can be in the desert with the scorching sun or in an icy environment dizzy with the cold. As a prepper bring also your cutting tools in your journey and expect the unexpected.

How to deal with water concerns?

You should spot local sources of water and be able to get there. Bring with you a filtration straw or purifying tablet in case you are in doubt about the safety of the water. If you cannot find any good source even contaminated water will refresh and rehydrate you, you can drink from it and deal with the issues later on rather than be dehydrated and die. The best way is to bring your water in your journey.

How to deal with food concerns?

It’s best before traveling that you will do some assignment in researching local foods and edible wild plants that you can eat. Bring also some calorie-rich bars of chocolates to keep your energy. As a general, rule does not eat anything that you’re unsure if it is safe for human consumption.

Knowledge is power

Knowledge may not be a guarantee for your survival outdoors but it will increase your chances of surviving once you’re in a challenging situation.

Primitive Survivors – Fun Outdoor Activities For Kids

Do you have kids who prefer to stay at your house playing on their tablets or just staring on a computer screen? Or kids who love to play virtual games and equate fun with the constant use of the internet.  As parents, we wish our kids could also have fun outdoors just as we did, before the advent of gaming technology and the internet. We want them also to flex their muscles, run, hide and seek and get dirty outdoors. In this post, we will give some fun outdoor activities your kids will love to participate in.

Primitive Survivors

Benefits of outdoor activities for your kids

It has been found out by numerous studies that kids who seldom participate in outdoor activities become obese, with health issues and fail to develop their social skills. Isolation by staying at home can also affect the mental health of your kids. They start to think that their virtual world is the real world failing to appreciate the beauty of nature and human relations.

When your kids participate in outdoor activities they’re able to develop their physical strength, social skills (teamwork, human relations, interdependence, and communication) and mental health. In short, when your kids are engaged in outdoor activities they will be developed as a total person.

Fun outdoor activities your kids will enjoy

Hide and seek

The game is to assign one kid to find the other kids while the assigned kid is counting up to five while looking at a base which is a big tree. The assign kid should find the other kids (who are hiding somewhere else in the outdoors). The task is to find his/her fellow kids who are hiding and outsmart as well as outrun them to the base which is the tree. Whoever is caught and outrun to the base will replace the assign kid. The former kid will now join the other kids in hiding. The cycle is repeated throughout the activity. The thrill of this activity is the search and marathon among the kids. It will also develop kid’s skills in hiding and using nature to cover themselves. You can incorporate a short lesson on safety here.

Water balloon

Fill a plastic tub with balloons with water and let your kids play with them by instructing them to go a distance and then the other kids will throw the water balloons to your kid with a baseball bat to hit the incoming water balloons.  The goal of your kid is to be able to hit many water balloons to maintain his/her position. The mechanics are like a baseball game in the field.

Obstacle course

Use chalk to draw some instructions to your kids before reaching the goal or target in order to get a reward (candies, chocolates or a simple hug from you). Use your imagination, you can write jump 3x then sing a nursery rhyme like Mary had a little lamp then hop 2x. It’s like playing snake and ladders.

Mud baking

Let your kids imagine they’re pastry pro and use their creativity to bake their favorite cakes and bread by using mud and some baking pan as well as tools. You’ll love their creation later on just don’t let them make you taste it you know it’s still made of mud.

Catch the egg

Instruct your kids to get a partner and let them throw the eggs to each other. The goal is not to let the egg break.

Hunter’s game

Using the materials of nature like a leaf, branch, flowers, and fruits, let your kids find them in the park. Collect some samples and paste them to a sheet of paper. Assign your kids to find the same materials in the park and gave it to you. The first one who will find all of the materials will get a reward.

Tower of babel

If you’re at the beach you can play this game and let your kids make a tower using the sand and any material they can find nearby. The goal is to make the highest tower that cannot easily be destroyed when the waves came in contact with it.

Bring your kids outdoor is making them complete

Letting your kids experience, have fun and enjoy the outdoors does not only make them reap many benefits but developing their survival instincts in the outdoors. They will be a child once and there is no turning back. Encourage them to enjoy the sunshine, the grass, wildlife and the beauty of the skies.

Primitive Survivors With Hiking Tips For Families With Toddlers

Hiking is a magnificent way to enjoy nature and get some fresh air. But what if you have got a kid in tow? Do not worry! The below-mentioned hiking tips for families with kids will help you make your journey enjoyable for adults and toddlers alike.

  • Select the hike location carefully

Look out for some simple hiking ways in your neighboring area either via your city or town’s amusement office or website. Easy, flat and perhaps even a rugged trail that permits for a stroller in case your infant gets exhausted is perfect.

  • Snacks and Drinks are a requirement

Do not let your little ones get starving and thirsty as that damages a trek and dehydration is a real concern. As the majority hiking trails do not have trash facilities, bring non-leakable and reusable containers. Just be sure not to pack the chocking foods in your container!

  • Use the Correct Gear

Bring a stroller that is strong enough to deal with tree roots; a trail with mulch and rough surfaces. You can chuck your stuff in the carrier and put your kid in there if they get tired. Also, a rucksack or bag that offers hands free comfort for you without resistance and big enough to carry all the things you are bringing is perfect.

  • Keep it Spotless

Always pack additional clothing and supplies in addition to a plastic bag to take home all the things such as wet clothes of your kid etc. For untidy faces and hands, try a cloth that and throw in the bag with the dirty, wet clothes. Hiking and being ecologically aware educates your kid how to treat the earth correctly from an early age.

  • Keep it Safe

Ensure your cellphone is charged and your route is not too drawn out. Also, notify a family member or friend if you are hiking unaccompanied with your kid and let them know precisely where you are going and when just for safety. Check the weather beforehand and dress in layers if it gets hot or cool without warning. Do not ever allow your child stroll out of your view or close to water. Also hide a few antibacterial wipes, bandages and spray in your backpack in case you require them. Hiking with a kid means safety first so being ready is vital.

  • Make it amusing and exciting for your kid

Most kids love adventures but at times a hiking trail can be less exciting for them. Make it amusing for them by asking them questions about the woods or what types of plants you see along the way. A magnificent way to get kids engaged is by packing some enjoyable things to keep fascinated as they wander along with you. Primitive Survivors is a distinguished name when it comes to furnishing with leading outdoor products able to endure any outdoor escapade. Primitive Survivors intends to be the one stop shop for gear and knowledge when it comes to surviving the outdoors.

Primitive Survivors – Tips For Stargazing At Camp

Staying overnight at the camp may need you to allot more time preparing for your gear and camping equipment. However, extending the time under the night skies and the night stars can offer you several surprises. One of the activities you can do at the campsite is stargazing. Here are the tips to enhance the experience.

Primitive Survivors

Research is important

Not every campground will offer the best chances of seeing the night sky spectacle. There are camping locations that are recommended for this particular outdoor activity. The first thing that you want to do is to research.

The Internet has an abundance of information about these, and you can often look for these lists also from travel guides in bookstores. They will have suggestions on places, and will also provide a how-to’s on spotting the elements in the sky.

Select locations that are far from urban areas and cities. Also, study which equipment you will need for stargazing. Generally, these include telescopes, a pair of binoculars, and even a sky map. There are now apps that will make these adventures more hassle-free.

But first…

Here are the things that must be on your checklist if you are looking at perfecting this activity. Naturally, you will have to prepare your eyes. At the present moment, your eyes are currently not at their best to gaze at the stars. They are stressed out of computers and smartphone displays. It is advisable to arrive at your chosen location and simply relax for about 20 minutes before starting to gaze above.

Get ready to stare for long hours, focusing on the details, and dressing up appropriately. Prepare the blanket that you’ll have on the cold ground, or perhaps prepare a chair where you can lie on your back comfortably.

Take advantage of technology

Your smartphones, hopefully, the signals are acceptable in the area, will help you enhance the overall experience. You will need to switch off as many lights as you can, adjust the brightness on your phones to maximize the visuals. Download Sky Map apps. The most recommended ones are Starmap on iOS, The Night Sky Lite on both iOS and Android, Sky Map Android, Sky Night Walks, Pocket Universe on iOS, and Sky Safari on iOS and Android.

Do you bring equipment?

If your family has telescopes and binoculars at home, you may bring them. However, experts also agree that you do not need to buy these expensive outdoor tools if you do not have them. Your eyes are enough to enjoy the night skies and all the elements that are scattered across them, as long as you have prepared well.

A practical, inexpensive tool that you can have is a star wheel. This is downloadable and printable from your laptop or PC. It works in such a way that the outer ring has the months written on it, and when rotated to the current date, the stars show up as they would in the night sky in the area on the wheel. This will be your guide to identify the stars and to instruct you on where you turn your gaze at.

Primitive Survivors – Common Wild Animals Which You Might Come Across While Hiking

While hiking, one may enjoy spotting different types of wildlife. While most are of them harmless, there are some who are quite aggressive. By adhering to a couple of simple instructions, you can very much decrease your chances of having a distasteful encounter with huge, potentially hazardous wild animals. However, it is important to keep in mind that, none of these animals see humans as a food source, unless they are sick or are starving. Almost all the attacks from wild animals are when they feel endangered, particularly if they are caring for young, guarding a food source, or if you frighten them. Some of the common wild animals which you might come in contact while on the trail:

Primitive Survivors
  • The mountain lion is one of the most common wild animals while trekkers may come across. They like to sit and wait in a hidden spot and then attack. A mountain lion will usually stay away from contact with humans unless it is wounded, sick, or starving.
  • The bear is another wild animal that the trekker may come across. They usually avoid humans but when they are hungry they may attack humans. Moreover, do not approach bears with cubs as they are extremely caring about their cubs and may become aggressive when approached.
  • Gray wolves are almost the size of German Shepherd. Do not run from the wolf, in case you encounter. Running triggers the hunt instinct. Wolves hardly ever attack humans, they usually take off running when they see humans.
  • Several people are injured by moose than by wolves and bears combined. Moose are the most energetic around dawn and dusk, and are the most violent in the early summer when the cows are raising their calves. They are tremendously defensive of their offspring. If you see a moose with young calves, stay away from her. Also, during the fall is the mating season for the moose. The moose may see you as a risk to steal his likely mates.

These are some of the most common wild animals that a hiker may come across when trekking.

Never try to go near to the wild animals to take their photographs. Click their images from an ample distance and you must check with your guide before doing so. During dark, keep a flashlight with you. Wild animals typically stay away from light. Moreover, keep fire near the camp. Sprays can be useful in the case when bear attacks on your camp.

Let an individual know about your schedule. It will be tremendously helpful if you land in an emergency. In such a case, that individual can come to your salvage.

Primitive Survivors On The Do’s And Don’ts Of Trekking

People go on a trek for various reasons; few trek for the excitement of it, some trek to find out new cultures and places, some do it get closer to the beauties of the mountains while some trek to find a sense of peace.

Primitive Survivors

As soon as you sign up for treks, it is important to know about the do’s and don’ts of trekking:

  • Carry your backpack and never offload it

Carrying your backpack is a part of the trekking experience. It is a witness to your mental and physical strength and is very empowering. This practice is encouraged for two more reasons. At first, even though there is a particular weight limit for backpacks, it is often found that trekkers are coming with overweight bags. Moreover, every time you offload a backpack, an additional porter is taken. With that comes the necessity for additional resources which results in surplus waste generation.  Hence, it is recommended to give it a stern thought prior to selecting to offload your backpack.

  • Carry reusable items

This is quite self-descriptive. Most trekkers find it tiresome to wash their own utensils. Some bring throwaway items for the trek. Even though reusable water bottles are recommended, use-and-throw bottles are often used by several. Not only are they a health hazard, they tend to gather and typically do not find a way out from the mountains. Remember that plastic bottles, plates are a common sight. They take several years to decay and are a hazard to any ecosystem, therefore, it is better to avoid such products.

  • Take your waste back

Finding places to dispose waste properly is a continuous challenge. Even when one does, the state of landfills is a far cry from set environmental benchmarks. The best way to decrease the load on these landfills is by deliberately taking back the ravage which is generated. This comprises the plastic bottles, packaged food wrappers, etc.

  • Don’t eat carelessly

Trekking is a demanding activity. Adequate nutrition is important.  Prepared from refined flour, instant noodles and other packaged food are anything but wholesome. To add to that it cause digestive disorders. At high altitudes, indigestion is a common disorder. It is always important to encourage local food as it is excellent for the environment, supports local sustainable farming and you get to experience the local culture.

  • Do not waste

Use resources austerely. Trekking is all about enjoying nature and surviving with negligible requirements. Thus, take on that idea and absorb it. Even organic and recyclable waste is waste. So make sure to avoid wasting.

  • Do not pollute

The streams and rivers you cross are the source of drinking water for several. Those in the valley consume this water directly without filtering. Thus, washing and peeing in the stream is a big no-no.
Birds and animals often turn away from the noises and change their behavioral patterns.  Thus, ensure to not upset our hosts and enjoy them in their natural setting.

Primitive Survivors – Everything You Need to Know to Take Your Dog Hiking

Many of us love so much our fur babies or canines to the extent that we want them always around us. Who would not miss our cute and huggable four-legged best friends? They are just so lovable and irresistible that we cannot leave them at home or a pet care shop whenever we go hiking. In this post, we will give you the things you need to know before taking your dog hiking.

Primitive Survivors

Things to consider in taking your dog with your hiking adventure

Preparation and endurance test

Not all dog breeds are created equal some are considered toy dogs with shorter legs and long bodies and some are muscular built like a wolf ready to hunt in the woods. You need to consider this fact and check the breed of your dog if it can endure hiking with you. It’s advisable that you take your dog into a short quick walk in the park to notice if your dog can endure long walks. Observe the behavior and reaction of your dog to the changes in the environment. You can also make a simulation of the woods and your hiking activities at home with your dog to observe canine reactions to such environment. It’s very important to prepare your dog to live in the woods and have the needed endurance for survival.

Leash your pet

This is a common mistake for hikers bringing their dogs with them. They like to give freedom to their dog in the woods. This is dangerous because your pet can get confused, loss or be attacked by wild animals in the woods. You need to control your pet by putting it on a leash, this is highly recommended. By putting it on leash you’re able to lead it to your hiking trail.  When your pet becomes too aggressive you can manage its behavior and when it senses fear you can reassure your dog it is safe with you around.

Right of way

When you encounter fellow hikers on the way go to the opposite side to give way. Not everyone loves and admires canine as you do, some people may fear dog that may be due to some bad experience they had. Be considerate to your fellow hikers and take the other side as a precautionary measure. This is the same standard of courtesy when you encounter on your way horses and bike riders.

Proper waste management

It is a must that you bring with you plastics for you to manage your pet waste or you can also bury it on the ground. Proper waste management for your pet is called for cleanliness and sanitation as well as environmental protection. When you decide to bury your pet waste don’t do it on a trail or near bodies of water to avoid contamination.

Refreshment for you and your pet

It’s very important that you bring ample water supply for you and your pet while hiking. As much as you need water to survive days in the woods your pet also needs refreshment. It’s also recommended to bring with you a filtration straw to ensure that your drinking water is safe and free from microorganisms.

Dog tag

Put all your contact information in your pet collar so that if it got loss people can reach for you.

Visit your Veterinarian

Before bringing your pet to be sure to pay a visit to your Vet in order to ensure that it got all the necessary vaccines, vitamins and protection it will need while going with your hiking adventure. It pays to know that your pet is in good health condition.

Two loves in one heart

Yes, your love for your dog and life outdoors can make you a better person. Hiking with your pet will develop your bonding as well as make both of you appreciative of nature. We give you the important things to consider before bringing your pet to hiking. We love to see you both enjoy and happy exploring the woods in your hiking.

Camping is an incredible experience for people of all ages. Whether you are camping on your own, with friends, your family or with spouse, there are lots of unbelievable places to go and several things to do at these astounding campsites. Camping in the forest is becoming quite popular in the recent times and there are lots of eye-catching campsite locations scattered across the globe. Forest camping offers you with the chance to live in the midst of nature and whether you select a designated camping site or like wild camping, there are loads of outstanding places to venture to.

Primitive Survivors

However, camping in the forest brings with it several new challenges. Some of the things you will need to give specific consideration to are how you will cook food, whether there are adequate activities for kids and how to go about pitching your tent.

Tips to camp in the forest

  • The Tent

The tent is without doubt the most significant accessory you will need to consider. If you are staying in a selected camping site, you might be able to bring a campervan, caravan, or other form of accommodation with you. However, for any kind of forest or wild camping, you will need an appropriate tent. If you are new to camping you will need to go out and purchase a tent for your adventure. After you have chosen one fit for purpose, ensure to try unpacking and pitching it prior to travelling. This will save you a lot of time and trouble when arriving at the destination.

  • Cooking Equipment

If you are staying on a selected campsite, the chances are you will have access to electricity, gas, and even water. There are also campsites devoted to camping, so you do not have to go out of your comfort zone. However, if you are planning on camping in the forest, you will need to consider how you intend to cook. Possibly there will be a local community nearby where you can shop, but if not, you will need to bring all your food and cooking equipment with you. You can invest in a gas stove for your tour and if this is what you intend to bring along, you will need to take adequate gas to last the trip.

  • Sleeping arrangements

Camping in the forest can be cold at night, even during the summer months. Hence, you need to make sure to bring sleeping bags that will keep you well protected from any plunge in temperature. For camping in the forest you will likely want to select sleeping bags and preferably, solutions that are well waded. After all, if the weather is humid, you can always unzip to some extent to help cool down. Also, do not forget to bring cushions with you as the ground can often be firm and rough. It is suggested to select sleeping mats as well, acting as cushioning support while also retaining heat at the same time.
