Primitive Survivors – Prepping for the Effects of Climate Change

Even if drastic changes are being made (they’re not!) to slow down or reverse the effects of climate change, the negative impacts are inevitable. Adaptation is how we will adjust to the different climates and the processes of preparing for extreme weather such as floods, droughts, heatwaves, severe winds, and severe snowfall.

Primitive Survivors

If you’re wondering how you can prepare for the impacts and help reduce the risks, we’re here to help you take action.

The Basics

Create a 30-day emergency reserve of all necessary commodities, such as food, water, heat, energy, lights, medicines, toiletries, etc. You also need to build back up redundancies in your water, power, heating, sewage, and other critical systems. It will be wise to acquire the tools and materials necessary to care for everyday needs, such as keeping warm, cooking, and managing waste with an old-fashioned latrine and safe garbage disposal

The key is to be as Sustainable as Possible

Prepping for the effects of climate change starts by adopting a sustainable lifestyle. One way is by creating an urban home or a garden that we will tackle later on. Here are sustainable prepping practices for you.

Get Your Home Converted to Green Energy Systems

These can be solar, wind, hydroelectric, or some other alternative form of energy generation greener than fossil fuels. Not only does it help lessen the effects, but it will also save you money over the long term.

Moreover, switching to this type of energy can also be seen as a patriotic duty and national security imperative. The U.S. and many other countries in the world still get a portion of their polluting fossil fuel energy supplies from areas of the world that are high-conflict zones where our energy supplies could be cut off, radically reduced, or priced so high that these changes would destabilize the productivity and economic stability of all countries in any way dependent upon importing those fossil fuels.

Invest in Durable and Reusable Tools

To reduce your carbon footprint, decrease your use of plastics and other disposable products. Go for durable, reusable bags, bottles, towels, mops, pots and pans, and anything else you need. Over the life of the products, you will reduce waste, reduce the energy-intensive extraction of virgin resources, and save money.

Grow Your Own Food

Global warming is likely to get worse than worst in the next ten years, resulting in more reduced or failed crops, soaring food prices, and growing starvation. These will be among the first wave of major consequences that will shake populations all over the world.

With the unreliable food distribution and the worsening emergencies, you will need to be able to create and manage your own food supply far beyond your initial 90-120 day emergency backup supplies mentioned above. Try garden creation or any other kind of personal food-producing activities.

Depending upon your location, within 10 to 15 years if you are not producing most of your food, you will have very undependable, expensive or non-existent supply and distribution of food. Food prices will begin to rise and require more and more of your money as climate change worsens. This will be caused by the five major grains having problems with the rising temperature. Rain bombs will also occur at random times, as well as severe insect infestations because of massive migrations.

Being an Eco-Prepper

An eco-prepper is someone preparing, in particular, for coming ecological catastrophes, seeking survival through sustainable prosperity practices, and other important social and economic principles and practices.

Most of these people are considered evolutionarees or those who consciously help evolve a better world. They also quickly learn from and do not repeat the same mistakes that caused the ecological catastrophe.

Primitive Survivors – How to Find the Best Campsite

Camping is fun, but finding the best campsite can be challenging. Picking a bad one will cause a lot of inconveniences to what is supposed to be an enjoyable overnight. This means it’s not enough to have a large tent and a comfortable sleeping bag. The hard ground, rocky area, and shade-less site will still bother some!

Primitive Survivors

To help you, here are some basic considerations that will put you on the right track.

Choose a Clear, Flat Ground

Think about where you will be sleeping. You don’t want to wake up in a bad mood because you haven’t slept well, so make sure to pitch your tent on flat ground. If you’re pitching on a slope, let your head be on top of the slope as you lie down. The benefit of inclined grounds is they will help avoid puddles in case it rains.

Rocks, roots, rubble, and stones also make an uncomfortable night’s sleep. You can clear your area of these anyway. But do your best to find a clear surface that is already free from debris that will save you from the hassle.

Look for Windbreaks

You’re lucky if you find natural windbreaks at your campsite. Hedges, fences, large boulders, rock outcroppings or small crops of trees will all offer protection from wind. Just make sure you’re not camping under a potential rockslide

Seek Shade

On a hot day, shade is a much-needed respite from the sun rays. It will help you feel more relaxed outside the tent, avoiding sunburns. The shade will also help you keep your cold food cold for longer. And it’ll help prevent a melted chocolate mess in your trail mix. Make sure the flat ground you’ll be sleeping in also has a sturdy tree by its side.

Consider the position of the sun throughout the day as well. Don’t set up camp beneath a branch that might fall any minute. Low-hanging branches are not ideal as they could obstruct the roof of your tent once it is up.

Access to Water

You can never bring enough water when you’re out camping. Easy access to water is essential, but don’t pitch too close to the water supply as this might contaminate it and it’s also a high-traffic area. Find a spot that is at least 200 feet away from the water supply. You can also try filling everything up all at once so you don’t have to keep coming back to the water.

Privacy

Think about your privacy, especially when there are other campers in the area. It’s nice doing your own thing while camping with no one prying on you. If you want to be in solitude, look for sites enclosed with bushes, rocks, or trees. They also serve as natural windbreaks!

Beware of Bugs and Other Environmental Hazards

There will always be insects during camping activities. But you can make sure to pitch a tent that isn’t on top of an ant colony or is far away from plants with many bugs.

Aside from these insects, make sure you are safe from rock falls, flash floods, high tide, or avalanches. You need to be aware of the local environment and not camp somewhere you can get hurt or worse, especially in the wild where there may not be helpful for miles around.

Finding the Best Spot takes a Trial-and-Error Method

The best spots are found and not made, but these tips will help you be able to easily tell whether a spot will suit you or not. Remember, the reason we go camping is to enjoy nature in all its beauty and glory.

We hope this will help make your camping more fun!

Primitive Survivors – Ways To Live On A Thunderstorm When Trekking

Thunderstorms vary from being gentle to harsh and they have the ability to definitely trash a camping experience and set you back on backpacking tours as well. Numerous individuals have even found themselves fascinated in these storms and this can remain trapped in the site for days at ends.

Primitive Survivors

One of the major troubles with camping storms is the floods and lightning that are associated with and most people might not be ready for managing these kinds of storms. But, with the right guidelines, you can find yourself in positions that you can either avoid the storms or manage them serenely and wait for some better days to enjoy your camping trip. Even as storms cannot be prevented, they can be managed with to ensure that you are able to have a growing effective camping experience. With the following tips and tricks, you will be able to not only be protected during these storms but instead of packing up and going home, you can manage them much better and show nature you have what it takes to stay living.

  • Lightning typically targets the tallest trees and therefore when making up your tent, you should try to stay away from the tallest trees. Although they might offer more gloominess for the summer, they do take a danger with them and once they are set in flames, you will need to jog to move your belongings. It is also vital to note that once you are caught in such a circumstance, the kind of tent you use could be scary to break down if you need to go. Moreover, you should stay away from any metal materials and remote trees as these are great conductors of electricity and can cause some issues.
  • Even though it may appear safe to just stay in your tent and wait for the squall to pass, it is not the most outstanding option. Tents are not as resistant to lightning as a motor vehicle and you should think about waiting in the car for the storm to pass. But, if you must continue in the tent, you should do accurately that as being outside is a little more dangerous than the tent. If you are camping in places where thunderstorms are common, it is always better to set up your tent anywhere beneath a cliff. This will keep the lightning from having a straight path to you and your tent. It is also important to note that you should search for floods and remain from riverbanks in cases of storms.
  • Camping in huge groups are pleasant, but sheltering one and all from a shower is not always trouble-free. If you cannot fit into cars, you must spread out rather than clustering up in a group. This will stop you from being hit by the lightning, but stop you from having numerous people injured if the lightning does hit.

Primitive Survivors – Seven Hunting Myths Debunked

There are many myths in every aspect of the world that people want you to believe in. The same goes for hunting. Sometimes, you can’t even tell which you should believe in anymore! But with proper education enough experiences on deer hunting, these perceptions will soon change.

Primitive Survivors

Here’s a list of hunting myths you should not believe in and the actual facts behind them!

Always Consider the Moon

The moon may matter as it is related to the five daily feeding time slots of whitetails during a 24-hour clock, but it does not influence the timing of the rut. Don’t play your hunt based on the phases of the moon. Otherwise, you will be left unsuccessful in hunting. Remember that the same goes for the weather. It does not affect the timing of the rut.

The rut happens at the same time each season, in a particular area. However, if you allow the weather to reveal peaks and valleys of daylight rutting behaviors and the moon to determine peak movement patterns during those particular quality weather days, you will be consistently rewarded. A good phrase to hunt by is that “A great moon during poor weather is a poor day to hunt. A poor moon during great weather is a great day to hunt”.

Deer Flee an Area Once Shooting Starts

This is only partly true. Animals never pack up their things and move. They just seek out hiding spaces in the day and visit food plots at night. They do not fully leave their location, as researchers at Auburn University state that deer only “react” to hunting season.

Older Deer at Better at Hiding

They aren’t. This is also proven by the same study mentioned previously. The researchers used deer of all ages, sizes, and similar behaviors. They found out that regardless of age, bucks responded negatively to increased hunting pressure. By late November the chances of a buck entering the harvest zone during daylight hours were only a quarter of what they were when the season started.

More Hours on the Field Means More Bucks on the Wall

Less is more when it comes to finding a mature buck successfully. When it comes to finding consistent success in hunting mature bucks, precision hunting practices are the most effective way to go. The secret here is to recognize high value sit opportunities and to make sure that the days are not spoiled by hunting during low-value opportunities.

Trail Cameras Frighten Deer

People, not trail cameras,  frighten deer. Placing blackout cameras at head level or higher and only accessing them during the hunting season when you hunt, is a great start! However, even if there is some risk that could be assumed by using a trail camera, the rewards far out way any potential concerns.

You Can’t Urinate Next to Your Stand

If deer pick up on the human scent, then it might sound like peeing on your treestand is a bad idea. But this isn’t true. Human urine elicits little to no response from deer because most of them do not associate it with a predator.  More than likely, the only way that peeing near your treestand will hurt your chances is if the deer hear you doing it.

Hunting is Unethical

Hunting only becomes unethical when the state laws are not followed and when the code of ethics are disobeyed. For instance, hunters see to it that they minimize the deer’s suffering by making accurate shots with appropriate tools. They also make sure to respect the land that these animals live in. Hunting is not just about the thrill of the chase or even the venison, it is about respecting your quarry.

Primitive Survivors – Pros and Cons of Food Plotting

There are plenty of benefits of planting food plots on your hunting property. It’s a no-brainer that they can help does acquire the nutrients needed to care for their young. And we all know that food plots can provide the protein necessary for bucks to develop their antlers in the summer, and the nourishment needed to help deer make it through hard winters.

Primitive Survivors

Want to know more about the benefits and downsides of food plotting? Continue reading this article made just for you!

Pros

  • Diversity. Diversity, both of plants and habitat, gives wildlife diversity in return. The importance of plant diversity when food plotting is not just planting clover or “big buck turnips”. For instance, early in the year deer will key in on soybeans or buckwheat, even clover and alfalfa are good options. Soon after that, they will transition to the hard mast foods to really get the high protein they need to sustain through winter, such as acorns. This applies to all species of wildlife.
  • Food Source. Letting corn stand during the last part of winter is great for turkeys and deer. It will also attract doves and a multitude of other wildlife species! Remember to treat the habitat aspect as equally important as the food aspect. If you provide everything wildlife will need in an area then there is no reason for them to leave.
  • More Knowledge and Skills. Food plotting gives so much joy about the fact that you are becoming aware of the natural cycles of life, rain, and sun. It brings fulfillment to people just watching creatures enjoying the fruits of their labor. It’s a way to give to wildlife what you’ve been getting from hunting.

Cons

  • Overseeding. Some hunters tend to use too many seeds, not knowing that it may lead to competition for nutrients in the soil. What’s worse about this is none of the seeds end up getting proper amount of healthy components from the ground. Your plot will never reach its full potential when not done the right way.
  • Hard to Maintain. Unless you have a lot of time, and you’re willing to exert more effort, you’ll get tired knowing that your work in food plotting is never done. Just because a food plot like clover is a perennial doesn’t mean you plant it and next year it doesn’t need anything done to it. They will need to be mowed, weeds have to be removed, and fertilizers will be needed again. Your hard work also needs to be doubled if there’s not enough sun, or when you forgot to do a soil test. Remember, without good, balanced PH levels in soil, plants can’t pull all the nutrients they need
  • Deer Overgraze. This is one of the biggest downsides of planting food plots. Take note that you need to put in a utilization cage around the plot to prevent the deer from eating all of it. Another solution is to plant several plots that all mature at different rates so the deer aren’t just hammering one plot. Some seed blends have a variety of plants in them that mature at different rates, which can also reduce this problem

Food for Thought

Food plotting helps you improve both the health of your local deer herd and the success of your hunting. But this is only possible when you do it the right way. Otherwise, the exact opposite will happen and all your efforts will go to waste. Remember to do a soil test, use different varieties of plants that grow in different rates and that deer enjoy, and just enjoy the knowledge and skills that you gain from planting food plots!

Primitive Survivors – How to Survive Worst-Case Camping Scenarios

Many of us love to venture into the great outdoors in order to enjoy nature and escape the pressures of everyday life. The best way to do so is by camping. It is the most relaxing, picturesque activity ever, unless an unexpected storm comes and everything else goes wrong!

Primitive Survivors

Camping can turn into a catastrophic activity in no time, and you should always know what to do! Prepare for these worst-case scenarios and hope for the best on your next adventure.

Stormy Weather at Campsite

If a storm rolls in your area, move your items inside the vehicle, especially those you don’t immediately need. Those items that you need to keep on your side should be covered with a tarp and stored in waterproof bags. Use your car as a windbreak by pulling it close to your tent or camper.

To avoid getting sick, do everything you can to stay dry, especially protecting you feet and clothes. Keep a change of clothes completely dry and only change into them after the storm has passed

Bears in the Campsite

Bears are motivated by two things: food and protecting their young. Although humans are not typical prey for bears, you should still beware of them. Remember to cook and store food at least 100 yards away from where you sleep, never in or out of your tent. Don’t even try wearing the same clothes you wore while cooking to bed since bears can have a strong sense of smell.

Another thing to remember to avoid bears in the campsite is that they are attracted to surprising things like cooking utensils, toothpaste, wet wipes, soap, medications, birdseed, and garbage. So keep these things away from you.

If you’re on a walking trail and you see a bear, speak in a low, calm, monotone voice while backing away. Do not turn your back away from them, nor run, and make eye contact.

Hypothermia

Backpacking and camping may not be tiring for some. You may not even break a single sweat that it can get too cold and someone catches hypothermia. Some signs of this may include unclear thoughts, slurring in speech, and lethargy. Remember to wear layers all the time to avoid this case.

When someone gets a hypothermia attack, respond quickly by adding extra layers in their sleeping bag or wrapping them in a cocoon for more heat source, and fixing up a hot bowl of soup, water, or anything to get their metabolism working again. Shed any wet layers from the patient. Handle them very gently to avoid cardiac arrest.

Out-Of-Control Campfire

A campfire can quickly turn into a wildfire. It’s either you evacuate instantly or try to manage it. Whatever your decision is, always contact the local authorities. To contain the fire, smother it with shovels full of dirt or with soaking, wet towels. If you’re near a stream or other water source, fill buckets or containers with water and throw the water on the perimeter of the fire. Move tents and other objects away from the flames.

Reduce the chances of a fire breaking out by clearing the area of flammable materials and limiting the release of ember.

Final Thoughts

Camping is a great way to relax, recharge, enjoy nature, get a workout, and spend time with people who are close to you. But the above situations are just proof that the activity also has pitfalls.

The following are just four of the most common worst-case scenarios you might encounter when camping with your friends or family. Be sure to acquire enough knowledge and skills for these events, even if you’re 100% sure it won’t rain during the camping activity or when you know the fire you put up is safe.

Several charities are providing trekking challenges, so it is no revelation that trekking is more and more popular. Prepare for your hike properly with the top trekking training tips. Treks can differ very much in terms of ascent, every day distances, descent and altitude, but all need specific preparation to make sure you get the maximum from your trekking tour. Trekking training tips including recommendation on trekking equipment, hydration, nutrition, and particular trekking training — will assist you prepare properly for your trek so that you are not left nursing blisters and sore legs after the initial day.

https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/primitive-survivors
  • Begin your trekking training early on

Even if your planned trekking trip is twelve months away, it is never too early to get started on your hike conditioning program. Look to build your strength and fitness slowly, giving your body times to become accustomed to the new demands that you are placing on it. That way you can take pleasure in your hike training and avoid risking damage by trying to do too much too soon.

  • Select the correct footwear for your trek

Good quality and suitable footwear for your trek and your walking training is vital. A helpful trekking shoe with ankle defense is vital but bewares of ankle cuffs that are too elevated as they can annoy the achilles tendon at the base of your calf. Search for an ankle cuff that is shoveled away at the rear. Ensure that your trekking boots are broken in and your feet have placed in thoroughly — the time for blisters is now, not during your hike. When buying your boots, try to shop in the afternoon when your feet have prolonged slightly so that you get the accurate size.

  • Build Leg Strength With Gym Work

Leg strength will be essential for your trek so in addition to walking training which will reinforce your legs, try and include either gym exercises for instance, bodyweight squats and weighted squats, or lunges and leg presses.

  • Don’t ignore your walking socks

With lots of footwear focus, it is simple to forget about the most excellent type of socks to sport. The accurate boots with the incorrect socks will damage your trekking tour so when trying on boots, don the same socks that you aim to utilize for your hike. Look for materials that have sweat wicking properties or that wick sweat away however are also water-resistant.

  • Build Your Walking Training

Walking training will be the basis of your training program and it is vital to build towards the sorts of distances steadily that you will be carrying out on your trek. At first, intermingle training days with break days but as your fitness improves, search to comprise some ‘back-to-back’ training days, which will more intimately replicate your actual hike.

Primitive Survivors – How Many Firearms do You Need?

Some people believe that the more firearms they have, the less reloading they would have to do, and the greater the chance to survive an SHTF scenario. Does this really work in reality? The truth is, this only works if all of the firearms you have are all chambered for the same rounds, you have a person behind each weapon, and they are all lined up as the firefight starts.

Primitive Survivors

Others, on the other hand, believe that one is enough to protect the family. As long as the shooter is skilled and there is enough ammunition, then you’ll do great in protecting yourself.

Read on as we discuss the best SHTF guns to have and if one firearm is really enough for such a situation!

SHTF Guns

First, you need guns that all members of the family, both beginners and experts, can use. Remember that others may not be able to effectively use heavy caliber handguns especially revolvers because the trigger pull may be too heavy for example.

Shotgun

You have the option of getting an automatic or pump action. However, those who are new to shotguns may find an automatic more reliable despite the disadvantages. The cycling of an automatic relies on the propellant’s load in the shell and there must be enough energy generated by the load to cycle the weapon to chamber a shell. Short strokes that jam the weapon can be a result of light loads.

A pump-action with a smooth bore is very typical and you can fire practically any shell with any load, and you can send virtually any projectile downrange that would fit in the shell.

Handguns

We recommend handguns like revolvers or semi-automatics. One for each member is the ideal number of handguns in the house, and they can carry it or conceal it on their body anytime. The effective range of a handgun makes it suitable for close-quarters combat. Handguns would be used once an aggressor is inside the perimeter of the home or in certain ambush situations.

Rifle

The AR-15 has what a shotgun doesn’t. Its range is between 400-600 meters, but keep in mind that the effective range is what you can realistically hit a target at, and not the maximum range. Remember you will not be the only one firing the weapon so prepare and set your range cards/fields of fire appropriately. In other words, set ranges according to the lowest skill level in your group and position shooters accordingly

For hunting, a .30-06 is the best selection. Remember your firearms are not just for personal/home defense. You need a weapon suited for hunting large game and for protection from large four-legged predators as well.

How Many Guns You Need

You may be thinking that if one firearm malfunctions, then it is important to have another one. This is certainly true, but if an asteroid hits the Earth, would 3 AR-15s really be helpful? You can have a dozen firearms in your house, but you might not know where you should store each of them for emergencies. You can have as many guns as you want but you might be too broke for ammunition.

Use some common sense and do not try to rationalize stockpiling weapons. Yes, you need them, but you have to focus on the real question: what type should you buy? Who are the responsible shooters in your family/group? If you are only concerned with arming yourself, you have only the two arms of course, and barring you want or require a secondary firearm you nominally only need one gun.

The Best Gun to Use

If you’ve decided to have only one gun for yourself, then you might be asking which type you need. The honest answer is, the single best gun to have in an SHTF scenario is the gun that you are most comfortable and comfortable with. That’s it. It’s really that simple.

In conclusion, as part of your preparations for survival events, it will be necessary to have only one gun per responsible shooter in the house. Think about the possible circumstances, and think about which one you’d be most comfortable to use in such a situation. Is it a shotgun? A handgun? Or a rifle?
